Objective Design

An objective is something the player needs to do in the game. It gives them a purpose — something to complete, achieve, or solve. Objectives are often called goals, missions, or quests, depending on the type of game.

Main, Side and Steps

Games often have different types of objectives. Some are big, some are extra, and some are smaller steps that build up to a goal.

  • Main Objectives – The big goals you must complete to finish the game.

  • Side Objectives – Extra tasks you can do for fun or rewards.

A combination of main and side objectives keeps gameplay varied, fun, and full of choices.

Examples of Objectives

Below are examples of objectives from different types of games.

  • Minecraft – Collect resources to build a shelter before night.

  • FIFA – Win the match by scoring more goals than the other team.

  • Mario Kart – Finish first in a race while avoiding hazards.

  • Fortnite – Be the last player or team standing.

  • The Legend of Zelda – Find and unlock the next dungeon to progress the story.

Writing about game objectives

When writing about game objectives, think about:

  • What does the player need to do?

  • Are there any extra tasks or bonus objectives?

  • What steps are needed to complete each objective?

There is always more you can write. Try to explain what makes the objectives interesting, challenging, or fun.
