Game Titles

“It’s the name of the game”

At its most basic, a games Title is the way people will refer to it. This changes for some games, for instance:

  • World of Warcraft is known as WoW
  • Call of Duty is known as CoD

A good game title often has a mix or all of the following.

  • Communicate a game’s theme or main idea
    • It should hint at what players can expect – Minecraft, Overcooked, Rocket League
  • Be both memorable
    • Short, punchy, and distinctive titles tend to stick – Fortnite, Among Us
  • Be easy to Say and Spell
    • If players can’t pronounce or search for it easily, they are less likely to remember it.
  • Stand out from other games
    • Avoid generic or overused terms to reduce confusion and improve discoverability
  • Match the Tone of the Game
    • The title should reflect the mood – whether it’s fun, serious, spooky, or educational.

The more of the above points that a game title hits, the more likely it is to be memorable.
