In-game roles can relate to:

  • The role of the player on a team.
  • The playable roles in a game.

Team Roles

Each role in a team is important as it can help direct the whole team towards more success. There are two key team roles that you must know.

In-game leader

The in-game leader is the captain of the team.

  • The main shot caller (decision maker).
  • Coordinating team tactics and strategy during matches.
  • Keeping their team motivated and calm.

 

Playmakers

If the in-game leader is the captain, the playmaker is the MVP.

  • Skilled players who can control a game and create opportunities.
  • Be the difference between winning and losing.
  • Support the in-game leader by helping execute their plans.

 

Playable Roles

There are a number of playable roles. Playable roles can either be genre specific or exist across multiple genres. The list of playable roles is constantly growing, especially as new games and genres become popular.

The following is a list of common playable roles in Esports games and genres.

Entry FraggerThe player initiating attacks, aiming to secure the first kill.​
LurkerA player who flanks and surprises enemies.​
ScouterA player who gathers information on enemy positions and movements.​
SlayerA player focused on getting kills and eliminating opponents efficiently.​
SupportA player who aids teammates with utility, healing, and strategic assistance.​
SniperA player specialising in long-range kills using precision weapons.​
TankResponsible for protecting the the team and absorbing damage.​
TopResponsible for protecting a lane within a MOBA.​
JunglerIn a MOBA, roams the map killing non player characters for experience and gold.​
In-game leaderCaptain of an esports team.
ADC (Attack Damage Carry)A very powerful role that requires protection.
Farm minions to get strong late game, deal big damage in team fights and push objectives.
MidPlays in the middle lane, facing the opposing mid laner.
Farm Jungle monsters, gank lanes, secure objectives
TopPlays in the top lane, usually against one other champion. Win the lane, become strong and durable, help win team fights and objectives.
PlaymakerUse their in-game skill to create wins.
