Tactics and Strategies

Tactics and Strategies refers to the different actions a team, or a player, can do within a game. This can range from the manipulation of a game mechanic or the outplaying of a team.

Tactics and Strategies can be applied to whole genres or be unique to specific games.

Split Pushing

When a team coordinates to attack two different areas at once, it is often known as split pushing.

This is more commonly seen in MOBAs but can be used in any team game which involves pushing to an objective.

As the majority of the team push one side of the map, a single player can then push another lane (in a MOBA) or objective.

Ultimate Baiting

Engaging a team until they use their cooldowns then retreating, regrouping, and then attacking again.

This is useful in a game where players have an ‘ultimate ability’ or an ability that is on a long cooldown.

Your team will act in a way that will force the opposing team to use their ultimates while saving your own.

After retreating or regrouping, your team then has the next team fight with all cooldowns while your opponent does not.

Pinching

Making the ball move faster when two players hit it at the same time.

This is specific to Rocket League but could be used in other similar games.

Two players attack the ball at the same time from opposite angles. The impact should hit the ball in a specific direction at high speed. Pinching can also be achieved between a player and a wall / surface.

Rotating

When a team changes positions so that one is always on attack while another is in defense.

This is more commonly seen in Rocket League but the tactic can be applied in a variety of scenarios.

While a player attacks the opponent (or the ball in Rocket League’s case), other members of the team get back into defense and prepare. When the attacking player becomes out of position, the defender then attacks and the attacking player returns to defense.

This ensures someone is always attacking and someone is always defending.

Adding more players to the rotation adds more security and more offense, but requires greater teamwork and communication.

Ganking

Waiting for an opponent is in a vulnerable position before attacking and defeating them.

More commonly seen in MOBA or Battle Royale games, ganking is very much a term to describe ambushing players.

In a MOBA, players will wait in long grass out of Line of Sight (LOS) for a player to approach. If the player is unaware or at low health, it provides the perfect opportunity for a free kill. Wait too long however, and valuable time could be lost.

Stun / Crowd Control

Hitting an opponent with a skill that stops them from moving or performing an action.

Stuns within games are extremely common. Stuns can be very annoying, but stunning at the right time can easily earn a victory for your team.

In short, stunning is the act of stopping another player or players from performing an action for a short duration. In this time, you or your team should aim to capitalise on the stun.

Warding

Gaining vision for your team so they can see the map.

In MOBAs, warding becomes more and more important the higher the rank you play at.

In your minimap, you will see the ‘fog of war’ which only allows you to see areas on the map that your team or minions can see. By placing wards, you can then have more vision of the map and allow you to see where your opponents are.

By seeing your opponents, you can protect yourselves from incoming attacks, while also setup your own attacks more effectively.

Farming

Gathering gold, experience, or resources by completing objectives or killing monsters.

Farming is a common term used in a variety of games.

In League of Legends, you can farm kills in order to gain gold and experience. In Fortnite you can farm materials in order to get more resources for building before going into a big fight.

Why are tactics and strategies important?

Understanding tactics and strategies helps you and your team play smarter, avoid traps, and win more often.

Using effective tactics and strategies can put your opponents under pressure, giving you a better chance of winning. Sometimes, the right strategy can be the key to victory.
