There are three types of image file formats that you must know at National 5. Each type has four traits, each trait making the image suitable for different purposes.

• Compression: The type of compression used and as a result the file’s size.
• Colour Depth: The number of bits used to store colour, per pixel. More bits, more possible colours.
• Animated: Whether or not the image type supports transparency.
• Transparency: Whether or not the image type supports transparency.
